Ecological Blue Flag
This award promotes the organization of local committees, healthy competition, and community organizations for the benefit of present and future generations. The Ecological Blue Flag Program is a free and voluntary award; Join the more than 5000 participating committees in the different categories as well.
What is the Ecological Blue Flag Award?
It is an award that promotes volunteer work in the areas of conservation and development, in accordance with the protection of natural resources, seeking the implementation of actions to face climate change and the quest for better sanitary conditions and public health improvement for the Costa Rican population.
Evaluation and Star Categorization
Evaluated once a year and categorized through white and green stars.
1 White Star:
Achieved by a committee that reaches an annual percentage of 90 to 100%, per the score established by mandatory parameters.
2 White Stars:
Achieved 100% of the percentage of mandatory parameters plus be a part of an internal or external recognition program. In the case of Parador Resort & Spa, the Certificate for Tourism Sustainability (CST).
3 White Stars:
Achieved by a committee that reaches the requirements for two stars and additionally promotes the implementation of the Blue Flag Award in any category through its value chain, with suppliers, direct collaborators and others.
4 White Stars:
Achieved by a committee that reaches the requirements for three stars and promotes the Blue Flag Award in any category in their immediate community: education centers, development associations, and public or private institutions, among others.
5 White Stars:
Will be obtained by a committee that achieves requirements for four stars and additionally verifies its carbon footprint.
Sustainable Homes, Green Star:
Apart from aspiring to earn the White flag award that spans 1 to 5 stars, a participating committee may also aspire towards one Green Star. For this purpose, they must register at least one family home in the Sustainable Home Category.
